Calculate Tips and Split Bills

The Tip Calculator is a gratuity calculator that computes the tip amount, total bill, and per-person cost when splitting a dining check among multiple people. It supports standard tip percentages (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) through quick-select buttons as well as any custom percentage, and it calculates both the tip and total per person when splitting the check.

Tipping etiquette and calculation is a universal dining situation that benefits from a reliable bill splitter. Whether you are leaving a restaurant tip, paying at a bar, a salon, or tipping for a delivery, this calculator ensures accurate tip amounts without mental arithmetic errors.

Key Features

  • Calculate tip for any percentage: Standard percentages accessible via quick-select buttons; custom percentage supported for any value.
  • Split bill evenly among multiple people: Enter the number of people to see each person's share of both the tip and the total.
  • Shows tip per person and total per person: Separate displays for tip portion and total amount when splitting.
  • Supports custom tip percentages: Override the quick buttons with any value from 0% upward.

How to Use the Tip Calculator

Step 1: Enter the Bill Amount

Type the pre-tax bill total in the Bill Amount field. This is the subtotal shown on your check before any taxes or gratuity.

Note: If tax is already included in the displayed bill and you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, subtract the tax first. If you want to tip on the full displayed amount, enter the full number.

Step 2: Set the Tip Percentage

Choose from the quick-select buttons for 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25% (the most common tipping percentages in the United States). The selected button highlights to confirm your choice.

Alternatively, type any custom percentage directly into the Tip Percentage field. This supports unusual situations like 12%, 22%, or a service charge of exactly 18% added by a restaurant for large parties.

Step 3: Enter the Number of People

If you are splitting the bill, enter how many people are sharing the check. For solo dining, leave this at 1.

Step 4: View the Results

Results show:

  • Tip Amount: The calculated gratuity in dollars
  • Total Bill: Subtotal plus tip
  • Tip Per Person (when splitting): Each person's share of the tip
  • Total Per Person (when splitting): Each person's total including their share of the tip

All amounts are formatted as currency.

Practical Examples

Example 1: Dinner for Two Bill: $85.50 | Tip: 20% | People: 2

Tip: $17.10 | Total: $102.60 | Per person: $51.30 each

Example 2: Large Group Birthday Bill: $320.00 | Tip: 18% | People: 8

Tip: $57.60 | Total: $377.60 | Per person: $47.20 each

Example 3: Coffee Shop Tip Bill: $6.50 | Tip: 15%

Tip: $0.98 | Total: $7.48

Example 4: Delivery Order with Custom Tip Bill: $42.80 | Tip: 22% (custom) | People: 1

Tip: $9.42 | Total: $52.22

Example 5: Restaurant with Large Party Auto-Gratuity A restaurant adds 18% for parties of 6 or more. Bill: $215.00 | Tip: 18%

Tip: $38.70 | Total: $253.70 | Per person (6 people): $42.28 each

Tips and Best Practices

Tip on the pre-tax subtotal: Technically, standard etiquette calls for tipping on the food and beverage subtotal before tax. In practice, many people find it easier to tip on the full amount shown. This calculator accepts either: just enter whichever amount you prefer to tip on.

Standard US tip ranges:

  • Counter service / quick service: 10–15%
  • Table service restaurants: 15–20%
  • Excellent service at fine dining: 20–25%
  • Delivery: 15–20% (minimum $3–$5 regardless of percentage)
  • Taxi / rideshare: 15–20%
  • Hair salon: 15–20% on the stylist's portion
  • Hotel housekeeping: $1–$5 per night
  • Hotel bellhop: $1–$2 per bag

Even splitting isn't always fair: The calculator splits evenly, but some diners order more than others. For accuracy, calculate the bill split with each person's items separately, then add tip individually.

Check for included gratuity: Some restaurants include gratuity on the check, particularly for large parties. Look for lines labeled "Gratuity," "Service Charge," or "Auto-Grat." If gratuity is already included, you do not need to add more (though you may choose to for exceptional service).

Quick mental math alternative: To estimate 20% quickly, find 10% of the bill (move the decimal point one place left) and double it. For $45: 10% = $4.50, so 20% = $9.00.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

The tip per person seems different from what I calculate manually. The calculator divides the full tip amount by the number of people, then rounds to cents. If each person's share has a fractional cent, the results may differ from your mental calculation by a penny. The tool always ensures the total sum works correctly.

I want to tip 0% (no tip). Enter 0 in the Tip Percentage field. The tip amount will be $0.00 and the total will equal the bill amount.

The bill amount field shows an error. Ensure you entered a positive number without currency symbols. Enter 85.50, not $85.50 or "eighty-five dollars."

Privacy and Security

The Tip Calculator operates entirely in your browser. No bill amounts, tip percentages, or any other inputs are transmitted to external servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tipping mandatory? In the United States, tips are customary and expected in most service industries, though technically not mandatory. In many other countries (Japan, most of Europe), tipping is less expected or not customary at all. When traveling internationally, research local tipping customs.

Should I tip on alcohol? Yes. Standard practice is to tip on the full bill including alcohol. For large bar tabs, tipping consistently at 15–20% is appropriate.

What is the standard tip for food delivery? 15–20% is standard, with a minimum of $3–$5 regardless of the order size. Factors like weather, distance, and order complexity warrant higher tips.

How do I tip in cash when the bill is paid by card? Simply calculate the tip using this tool, then leave the cash separately on the table or hand it to your server. You can write $0 on the tip line of the card receipt or leave it blank.

Should I tip on takeout orders? Takeout tipping has become more common, particularly for orders that require significant preparation. 10–15% is appropriate for restaurant takeout; tipping at counter service for quick pick-up orders is discretionary.
