Data storage uses base-10 prefixes (SI) in this calculator: 1 kilobyte = 1,000 bytes (SI standard). Some operating systems use binary prefixes where 1 kibibyte = 1,024 bytes. Keep this in mind when comparing with OS-reported file sizes, which may use binary definitions.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

Results seem very large or very small. Units within a category span many orders of magnitude. A value entered in meters will appear very large in millimeters (×1,000) and very small in kilometers (÷1,000). This is correct; check the unit prefix and scale. If the result is unexpectedly off, verify you selected the right source unit.

The energy Calorie (kcal) vs calorie (cal) distinction. In nutritional contexts, "Calorie" (capital C) means kilocalorie (1,000 small calories). The energy category includes both. Food labels report kilocalories as "Calories." The calculator shows both kCal and cal results, so you can see the distinction clearly. A 300-Calorie food contains 300 kCal = 300,000 cal.

Data conversions seem off by a factor. Storage devices and internet providers use SI (decimal) prefixes: 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Operating systems like Windows traditionally use binary prefixes: 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB but display them as "GB." A 1 TB hard drive shows as approximately 931 GB in Windows. This calculator uses SI definitions.

Nautical miles versus statute miles. 1 nautical mile = 1.852 km = 1.151 statute miles. Nautical miles are used in maritime and aviation navigation because one nautical mile equals one minute of arc of latitude. The length category includes nautical miles for this purpose.

Why does the area category include both square feet and acres? Square feet and acres serve different scales. Interior room measurements use square feet (a 15 × 20 room is 300 sq ft). Residential lot sizes may use square feet for city lots but acres for rural properties (1 acre = 43,560 sq ft). The area category covers the full range from square millimeters for precision manufacturing to square kilometers for geographic areas.
