The result is your after-tax, after-deduction income: the amount that actually funds your life.
This tool is essential for personal financial planning because nearly all expense management, budgeting, and savings goal-setting should be based on net income, not gross income. Gross income is what an employer pays; net income is what you actually have available. The gap between the two can easily be 25–40% of gross pay, which means using gross income for planning leads to systematic overestimates of available funds.

How to Use the Net Income Calculator
Step 1: Enter Gross Annual Income
Input your total gross annual income before any deductions. For salaried employees, this is the annual salary figure. For hourly workers, multiply hourly rate by weekly hours by 52. For self-employed individuals, use net business income before income taxes (but after business expenses).
Step 2: Enter Tax Rates
Input your estimated federal income tax rate (use your marginal bracket as an approximation, or use 22% as a middle-income estimate), your state income tax rate (0% for no-income-tax states, up to 13.3% for California residents), and leave FICA at the default (6.2% Social Security up to the wage base, plus 1.45% Medicare).
Step 3: Add Other Deductions
Enter any other regular deductions from gross income: health insurance premiums (employee share), dental and vision premiums, 401(k) or other retirement contributions, HSA contributions, and any other pre- or post-tax deductions.
Step 4: Review Net Income and Effective Rate

Tips and Best Practices
Use effective tax rates, not marginal tax rates, for net income estimates. Your marginal tax rate (the rate on your last dollar of income) does not apply to all your income. The effective tax rate (total taxes divided by total income) is the accurate measure of your actual tax burden.
Pre-tax deductions reduce your taxable income. Traditional 401(k) contributions, HSA contributions, and most employer-provided benefit premiums reduce your federal taxable income. Enter these to see their tax-reduction benefit alongside their deduction impact on take-home pay.
Net income will differ from your actual paycheck. This calculator uses annual estimates divided by months. Actual paychecks reflect pay period tax withholding, which may differ from your eventual annual tax liability. The year-end difference is reconciled when you file your tax return.
State income tax varies dramatically. Nine states have no income tax (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming). California has the highest top rate at 13.3%. State tax input significantly affects net income estimates across different locations.
For self-employed income, also calculate self-employment tax separately. Self-employed individuals pay both the employee (6.2% + 1.45%) and employer (6.2% + 1.45%) shares of FICA, totaling 15.3% on net earnings, well above the 7.65% shown for employees. Common Issues and Troubleshooting
My actual tax withholding on my paycheck is very different from the calculator's estimate. The calculator uses simplified tax rate inputs. Actual withholding depends on your W-4 allowances, additional withholding requests, and tax bracket application. The calculator provides an approximation; your annual tax return is the true reconciliation.
The effective tax rate seems too high. Check whether you entered the marginal rate instead of an effective rate for federal taxes. Alternatively, the progressive bracket structure means that not all income is taxed at the top rate, so entering your top bracket rate overstates federal taxes. Adjust downward for a more accurate estimate.
I have multiple income sources (salary plus freelance). Add all income sources for gross income. However, self-employment income has different tax treatment (self-employment tax) that this calculator does not fully model. Use the net income calculator as an approximation and consult a tax advisor for accurate multi-source income tax planning.
