How Time Zones Work

The world is divided into 24 standard time zones, each one hour apart. Time zones are expressed as UTC offsets (e.g., UTC+5:30 for India, UTC-5 for Eastern US). The International Date Line marks where the calendar date changes.

Daylight Saving Time

Many countries adjust clocks by one hour seasonally. The US shifts clocks forward in March and back in November. The EU is currently phasing out DST. This calculator uses standard offsets. Always verify for current DST status during transitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the global time standard. All time zones are expressed as UTC offsets. For example, New York is UTC-5 (EST) or UTC-4 (EDT during daylight saving time).
