Ideal Weight Calculator

Last updated: March 25, 2026

Calculate your ideal body weight based on your height and gender using four scientifically validated formulas. Our calculator uses Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas to provide a personalized healthy weight range rather than a single number, giving you a realistic target window. Understanding your ideal weight helps you set realistic fitness goals and assess your overall health. Unlike BMI alone, ideal body weight calculations consider your gender, providing more personalized guidance. Enter your height and select your gender to see your ideal weight range across all four medical formulas.

Understanding the Four Formulas

This calculator uses four established ideal weight formulas developed for medical and clinical use. The Devine formula (1974) is most widely used in healthcare settings. The Robinson formula (1983) may be more accurate for women. The Miller formula provides the lowest estimates, useful as a lower bound. The Hamwi formula (1964) produces results between the others.

Why Multiple Formulas?

Each formula was developed using different study populations and methodologies, which is why they give different results. Rather than fixating on one number, use the range across all four formulas as your healthy weight window. Any weight within this range can be considered ideal for your height and frame.

Healthy BMI Weight Range

In addition to the four formula results, this calculator shows the healthy BMI weight range for your height. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy by the World Health Organization. The weight range corresponding to these BMI values gives you an additional reference point alongside the formula-based ideal weights.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Select Gender - Male and female formulas differ due to body composition differences. 2. Choose Unit System - Pick metric (cm) or imperial (feet and inches). 3. Enter Your Height - Input your height in the selected unit. 4. View Results - See your ideal weight from all four formulas, the average, and healthy BMI range.

Example: Tall Man

Marcus is 6'2" and wants to know his ideal weight range. - Height: 188 cm (6'2") - Gender: Male - Result: Formula range of approximately 176-186 lbs across all four formulas, with an average around 181 lbs. The healthy BMI range for his height is 139-189 lbs. Marcus can use both the formula results and BMI range to set a realistic weight target.

Example: Petite Woman

Emma is 5'0" and unsure what a healthy weight looks like for someone her size. - Height: 152 cm (5'0") - Gender: Female - Result: Formula range of approximately 100-117 lbs across all four formulas. The healthy BMI range for her height is 85-115 lbs. For her petite stature, weights in this range are perfectly healthy.

Example: Athletic Man Comparing Formulas

Jason is 5'10" and lifts weights regularly. He wants to understand how his 180 lbs compares to ideal weight formulas. - Height: 178 cm (5'10") - Gender: Male - Result: Ideal range 155-171 lbs (Devine: 166 lbs, Robinson: 168 lbs, Miller: 170 lbs, Hamwi: 157 lbs). Jason exceeds the formula range but carries significant muscle mass. For athletic individuals, being above formula predictions while having low body fat is healthy.
