The title tag appears as the clickable headline in search results. Keep it between 50-60 characters to avoid truncation. Place important keywords near the beginning and make it compelling to encourage clicks.
The meta description appears below the title in search results. Keep it between 150-160 characters. While not a direct ranking factor, a good description improves click-through rates. Include a call to action and relevant keywords.
Open Graph (og:) tags control how your page appears when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social platforms. The og:image should be at least 1200x630 pixels for best display. These tags don't affect SEO but are crucial for social media marketing.
Twitter Cards control how your content appears when shared on Twitter/X. 'summary_large_image' shows a large image preview, while 'summary' shows a smaller thumbnail. Twitter can fall back to Open Graph tags if Twitter-specific tags aren't provided.
'index, follow' allows search engines to index the page and follow links. 'noindex' prevents indexing (useful for private pages). 'nofollow' prevents following links (rarely needed for standard pages).
The canonical URL tells search engines which URL is the 'master' version of a page. This prevents duplicate content issues when the same content is accessible via multiple URLs (with/without www, http/https, etc.).
Google typically displays 50-60 characters (or ~600 pixels). Titles longer than this may be truncated with '...'. Include your primary keyword near the beginning and make it compelling for clicks.
